How much does a mural cost?
Short answer: most custom murals are priced as a single project quote based on size, surface, height, detail, and location — not a fixed menu. Here's how that actually breaks down, from a muralist with 600+ walls painted across South Florida since 2003.
What actually drives the price
Two murals of the same square footage can cost very differently. These are the factors that move the number:
- Size & square footage. Bigger walls cost more in paint, time, and labor — though the price per square foot often drops on very large walls.
- Surface & prep. Smooth, primed drywall is quick; rough stucco, brick, metal, or a wall that needs cleaning, patching, and priming adds prep time.
- Height & access. Anything above arm's reach needs lifts, scaffolding, or boom equipment — a real line item for building-scale exterior walls.
- Detail & style. A bold graphic design paints faster than a photorealistic portrait with fine gradients. Complexity is time, and time is cost.
- Location & permitting. Travel, site logistics, traffic control, and municipal permitting (common on civic and public walls) can factor in.
- Sealing & longevity. Exterior murals in the Florida sun and salt air are sealed with protective coatings so they last — worth every dollar.
Interior vs. exterior
Interior murals (lobbies, restaurants, offices, homes) are usually more straightforward — controlled surface, no weather, lower access needs. Exterior and building-scale murals involve equipment, prep, weather windows, and sealing, so they sit at the higher end.
How muralists usually price
Across the industry, custom murals are commonly quoted either as a flat project price or by square foot, with the rate rising for detail and access and falling for large, simpler walls. Commercial and workplace murals frequently range anywhere from a few thousand dollars to well into five figures depending on scale and complexity. Civic and building-scale public art is a separate tier with its own budgets and process.
